Digital Preservation and Access to Historical Archives in CEE

This conference brings together leaders in US and European digital historical archives to meet in a high level but informal setting with their colleagues from New Europe archives.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and so the preservation and access to historical archives are high on everyone's mind, especially in Central & Eastern Europe. The EU has recently begun to get more active in financing digital archival efforts (usually in the form of eGovernance funds), but there remain many questions in the minds of CEE archivists on just how exactly to go about satisfying this agenda. On the other hand, some archives in CEE are making remarkable strides, which can serve as models for the world.

This meeting is one of those rare occasions for addressing all challenges that modern digital archives encounter. It also aims to discuss in particular the opportunities in CEE, highlighting the good practices.

The selection of the speakers was limited to the time and place and meant to open a broader discussion which would be followed.

The meeting is held in the Kaunitz palace in Prague, which is a rococo building constructed in 1775 by Antonin Schmidt and decorated by Ignac Platzer.
